A-shubhodristi: Kabul Korini

A-shubhodristi: Kabul Korini - A story book mapping the impact of child marriage on queer and trans individuals assigned female at birth - As the title clearly claims this is a first person narrative book focused on child marriage experiences of queer and trans individuals. We have reached out to queer and trans individuals (who have been assigned female at birth) with experiences of child marriage. We got 11 interviews. These interviews were transcribed and later edited to take the shape of a story. 8 narratives were finally published in this book with graphic illustration of each stories. The book becomes a live document that foregrounds the unique challenges of queer and trans lives that can be used for future policy changes and reclaiming civil rights. The themes that came up are natal family violence, custody of child born out of child marriage, transnegativity & homonegativity, housing rights, right to document romantic partnership, chosen family rights and care networks, forced migration, intimate partner violence, social media, etc. We consider the publication of the book a huge success. The intersection of child marriage and queer & trans lived experiences is not explored. It opens up several critical questions in terms of claiming rights in our contemporary times. The book had its dissemination at the stall of the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) within the campus of the 48th Kolkata International Book Fair on 1st February 2025. Two stories were read out followed by public interaction.

Gender is assigned at birth. 'Lucky' are those who can cope up with their given gender. But those who cannot, often take refuge of sex reassignment surgery. Some go for legal and some go for social transitions too. However, in both cases, they are part of the binary world of either man-woman or transman-transwoman. Our book, Gender Chemistry: Non- binary Life Scripts is a fruit of multi-fold dialogues with various gender diverse persons who are not ensnared in this binary-ness.

To reflect the terminology in the European context, the term 'non-binary' was employed as an umbrella term for anyone who does not identify as exclusively male or female. It includes viewing and experiencing gender as a spectrum rather than two binarized distinct categories.

Monologue : Lesbian narratives of Bangladesh and West Bengal

After a lot of discussion the name of the book was decided to be 'Monologue - Lesbian Narratives from Bangladesh and West Bengal'. We wanted the word 'lesbian' to be there, so that it can stare at us boldly from a well organised book-rack, send us signals, tempt us, even dare us. And 'monologue' because those who took part in sharing their narratives with us, expressed themselves in their own language, their own interpretation of livings. We truly hope that these few monologues will pave the way to a larger number of dialogues happening between people; conversation and communication will continue to take place. Barbwire between 'us' and 'them' will at least be challenged.
